What is a Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement?
If there is damage to the shoulder joint either from an injury or arthritis, and the tendons around the shoulder are badly damaged or torn, then a reverse total shoulder replacement may be advised. This complex operation requires special expertise and experience.
This type of replacement does not rely on the rotator cuff tendons around the shoulder to keep it in place and allow movement.
It is very successful in relieving pain around the shoulder.
By using this configuration the centre of rotation
of the shoulder is closer to the middle (medialised)
and the upwards pull of the deltoid causes the
shoulder to rotate upwards.
